Hello everyone!
Instrumental Music Expectations1. Be On Time!!! 2. Have required materials: instrument with reeds (if needed) and mouthpiece, music, PENCIL 3. In assigned chair with music, instrument and stand ready to start after 2nd bell 4. Playing outside the school day (not including evening playing activities) – PRACTICING! 5. Return each rehearsal having improved from the previous rehearsal 6. Positive class participation 7. Attendance at required weekly band lessons (ALL OF THEM) 8. Attendance at required performances (ALL OF THEM) 9. In order to leave our program the student will need to conference with teacher/principal/parents prior to schedule changes 10. Respectful towards teacher, others and all belongings in the classroom 11. Communication, cooperation and patience with teacher and others 12. HELP EACH OTHER 13. Have a GREAT time and be proud of the group you are a part of!!!
Grading ScaleGrades 5-12 instrumental music follow a PASS/FAIL grading system. The following categories contribute to the point system resulting in the PASS/FAIL grade: 1. 60% and above = PASS 2. 59% and below = FAIL 3. Performances = 70% of grade 4. Weekly Lessons = 30% of grade
POINT SYSTEM 1. WEEKLY LESSONS = 10 pts each a. required one lesson a week b. students start with 10 points initially for each lesson c. students must show practice, improvement and understanding to sustain the 10 points d. 9 pts. = understanding/improvement with minimal practice 8 pts. = minimal understanding/improvement and practice 7 pts. = minimal understanding/improvement and little practice 6 pts. = little understanding/improvement and no practice 5 pts = no understanding/improvement and no practice 0-4 pts. = attendance to skipped, forgotten, ill, quiz or test taking e. ALL MISSED LESSONS WILL BE MADE-UP AT A TIME SET-UP WITH MRS. BABCOCK f. teachers are to keep students from make-up lessons if so wish, and the students will then arrange a different time g. students will not attend a lesson if a quiz or test is being administered at the time of lesson, and a make-up lesson will be arranged
2. PERFORMANCES a. Concerts = 100 points each b. Field Shows (HS Marching Band only) = 100 points each c. Carroll Band Days Parade (HS Marching Band only) = 100 points d. Guthrie Cty Fair Parade/Homecoming Parade (HS Marching Band only) = 50 points each e. Pep Bands (HS Band only) = 10 points each f. Solo Contests: grades 6-8, required = 100 points grades 9-12, not required = extra credit points TBD by Mrs. Babcock g. Large Group Contests (HS Band only), required = 100 points
CURRICULUMGC Bands in grades 5-8 utilize the lesson book Essential Elements 2000; percussionists also utilize The Performing Percussionist as well. Students are to meet specific musical abilities based on their years of playing and experience. Each student is given individual assessments, adaptations and accomodations throughout the year based on their abilities and talents. GC Bands follow the Iowa Core Curriculum guidleines such as 21st Century and Literacy (along with others), as well as Guthrie Center School guidelines. Guthrie Center High School hosting State Solo and Small Ensemble ContestApril 13, 2012 - GCHS will host class 1A contest. This contest is open to the public free of charge; a free will donation box will be present at the entrance. Full Band Rehearsals
Full band rehearsals will begin shortly after school begins in the fall. A letter will be sent home notifying you of rehearsal schedules and times.
Students will rehearse in the GC band room from 3:00-3:40 PM on their assigned day(s) of the week. A bus will load at GC elem. at 3:50 to transport students. Students are expected to bring all materials with them they intend to bring home. Bus riding students will load their bus following rehearsal to be transported home, with non-bus riding students arranging their own transportation home.
All materials are required at full band rehearsals.
Tuesdays - 6th Band
Wednesdays - 5th Band
Fridays - bands alternate every other Friday
**Parent/Guardians - please help remind your student to bring their horns to school when needed!**
Keep those practice minutes going! Your goal to reach each week is 100 minutes, then return to your lesson each week having recorded all your minutes AND a parent/guardian signature. Remember, 3-consecutive weeks of reaching 100 minutes results in a gift from Mrs. Babcock.
Also, the first band to have ALL the students reach the 300 minute challenge will receive a cookie party from Mrs. Babcock!
